Spreadsheets

  • to identify key parts of a spreadsheet
how to enter and edit data
to use simple formulas and functions
    how changing data affects outcomes
  • use cell references correctly
be able to create a basic formula using =
be able to use simple functions such as SUM correctly
be able to explain what happens when spreadsheet values change

Formulas

  • A formula tells the spreadsheet to calculate something automatically.
  • For example:
    • =A1+B1
  • Formulas always begin with =
  • We use formulas for two reasons:
    • It saves us having to calculate a cell value every time we change something
    • It means there are fewer opportunities for mistakes

Examples - adding two numbers

  • Adding cells together can be done with the following formula:

= A1 + 4

= A1 + B2

What is a spreadsheet Function?

  • A function is a built-in formula
  • For example:
    • = SUM(A1 : A10) - from cell A1 to cell A10
    • = SUM(A1 : B3) - from cell A1 to cell B3
  • SUM adds numbers together automatically.

What will it show in A4?

other spreadsheet functions

  • AVERAGE - gets the average of all of the cells
  • MAX - gets the maximum number in the range of cells
  • MIN - gets the minimum number in the range of cells
  • COUNT - tells us how many cells are in the range

Demo

What will be shown in C5?

436

Which formula would add all of these together?

= SUM A1 TO A6

= SUM (A2:A6)

= SUM(A1:A6)

= SUM(A1:6)

What would be displayed?

£9.85

£3.20

£1.20

320

What would be displayed if we used = MAX(D2:D6)?

What happens if we change something?

Mikey wants to see what would happen to his money if he was paid slightly more.

So, he adjusts his income.
