What is a website?

Learning Intentions

  • Understand the idea of a website, especially compared with a webpage

Success Criteria

  • I can explain what a website is
  • I can provide examples of websites I use

What is a website?

  • This first lesson is nothing more than an introduction to website development
  • In this lesson, we are going to be looking at what a website actually is

So what is a website?

  • Discuss what you believe the term website to mean.

What is a website?

  • The word website refers to a collection of webpages and related content published to a web server and accessible on the Internet or a private network.
  • Normally websites have a web address, properly known as domain name.
  • Websites are linked together using hyperlinks
  • Web-based technologies are used to develop and deliver these webpages

The web and the internet

  • Discuss the difference between the [world wide] web and the Internet.

The web

  • Websites are built with webpages.

  • These webpages are written in several languages known as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. These are all client side languages.

  • Additionally, we can use server-side languages like PHP, ASP.NET or Java to pre process pages before they are sent to the client (more on this later).

  • Websites are requested using a website address (known as a URL, more later).

index.html

  • The index.html page will be the homepage of a website.

  • If you create a folder and put index.html you can just use the folder name rather than having to put the index.html at the end. This allows for nice URLs to webpages.

An assets folder

  • An assets folder is a good idea for storing things like images, CSS and JavaScript, videos and reusable resources.

  • Get into the habit of organising your folders now, it comes in useful later!

Our assets folder

  • Create folders inside the assets folder for each of the different types of assets.

  • This is good for when you ultimately publish your website to the internet.

Find a minimum of 5 examples of websites you use regularly and enjoy using.

Explain the following:

  1. Why you enjoy using it
  2. What you use the website for
  3. What you like about the design of the website
