What is social media?

  • Social media is a collective term for a bunch of online socialisation platforms.
  • The Internet has 4.8 billion users.
  • The biggest social media platform, by a long shot, is Facebook with 3 billion users, followed closely by Instagram with 1.1 billion active users and then TikTok with 1 billion active users, Twitter is in fourth place with 400 million active users.

  • 95 million posts are shared each day on Instragram
  • Facebook is used most between 1 – 3 pm and between 7 – 8 pm
  • One billion hours of YouTube are watched daily
  • 55 billion messages are sent each day on WhatsApp

Problems associated with social media

  • Exposure to cyberbullying
  • Decrease in productivity levels - neglect their school work, extra-curricular activities and even their friends and family so that they can play a game or chat about various things not related to schoolwork.
  • Destroys social skills
  • Leads to disclosing of too much information

Benefits of social media

  • More informed about current affairs - enables you to make informed decisions based on what you know
  • It is easier to study and carry out research work - use them to ask each other difficult questions that they could not solve on their own. It also makes it easier to for group discussions
  • Boosts self esteem - can freely express themselves. They can join groups and fan pages that they are interested in and which reflect their own unique personality
  • Assists in getting jobs - many jobs posted and applied for with the use of social media
  • Keep up to date with the current technology - to keep up with the changing trends in technology.
